At 4 a.m.

After Wendy Cope’s ‘At 3 a.m.’

You don’t sleep how you used to
Because of what you left for them
In a box you filled

Notebooks lie open on your head.

You left the box there years ago,
And you want to know
How good their sleep feels,
And if they now know
What you always knew too.
