Albert K. Ashes-Bury’s Rough Sketch

I am building a straw man for my poetry
sitting on a hay bale in a field
pretending to enjoy the sun, while labourers
walk home from work measuring me—

pointing the finger; downing their beer—as I sketch them

building a straw man for my poetry
sitting on a hay bale in a field
pretending to enjoy the sun; while really
I am the scarecrow a long way from Kansas.
